BMW 5 Series [E28]

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Built from 1981 to 1987, the E28 BMW 5 Series made its first appearance in the movie trailer for Fallout. Again, it appears both Cruise and co-star Simon Pegg take the front seat and do their own driving stunts for the movie. The partnership with BMW is paying for itself.

1990 Land-Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation (2015)

It seems like in most action movies the cast of characters often move around in various Land Rover vehicles of differing vintages. In Rouge Nation, its utilitarian design and rugged exterior make it the perfect vehicle for hauling bad guys or the movie's stars.

Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018)

Here we see the good guys climbing out of another vintage Land Rover Defender 110 Station Wagon. We can't decipher the year, and the IMCDB doesn't have one yet either. However, it's still a tough-looking and imposing vehicle that fits the aesthetic of an action movie.

1991 BMW 316i [E36]

Appeared: Mission: Impossible (1996)

Humble beginnings mean humble cars. When Mission: Impossible opened, it wasn't the high-octane franchise it is today. Not every car could be a Ferrari. This 1991 BMW 316i, according to the Internet Movie Car Database, appeared only briefly before exploding. If you have to blow up a car – make it cheap.

1994 Ford Falcon GLI [EF]

Appeared: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

While the Falcon name disappeared from the U.S. decades before Mission: Impossible 2, the automaker continued to use the nameplate in Australia, where much of the John Woo-directed film took place. A five-speed manual was standard pairing with either a 4.0-liter straight-six or 5.0-liter V8 engine.

1995 Holden Statesman [VS]

1995 Holden Statesman [VS]

Appeared: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

It's difficult to guess the years on some of these cars, such as this 1995 Holden Statesman. Often, the cars are only on screen for brief moments, and changes are minimal from one year to the next. If the Holden Statesman looks familiar, it's because it's part of General Motors' rampant badge engineering of the 1990s. Under the hood was either a 3.8-liter V6 or a 5.0-liter V8.

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

This one is hard to make out due to the lighting, but pushed into the background and tucked between a Bentley and a Porsche is a Mercedes-Benz SLR McLaren. The car was in production from 2003 until 2010 when the SLS AMG replaced it.

2006 Lamborghini Gallardo

2006 Lamborghini Gallardo

Appeared: Mission: Impossible III (2006)

Mission Impossible III is the entry where the franchise starts to go big – bigger stunts, bigger set pieces, and bigger cars, such as this 2006 Lamborghini Gallardo. While striking on screen, it meets an untimely and explosive fate. Thankfully, it's said the one destroyed was a fake.

BMW i8 Concept

BMW i8 Concept

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

Putting upcoming vehicles in movies isn't new, but when the BMW i8 Concept appeared in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, it looked stunning next to the other supercars of the era. Production for the i8 didn't start until 2014; however, the real-world car retained much of the concept's styling, meaning any of us could feel a bit like Ethan Hunt behind the wheel.

2014 BMW M3

2014 BMW M3

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation (2015)

The 2014 BMW M3 is most famous for having Cruise behind the wheel with co-star Pegg in the passenger seat during an intense action sequence. Both performed all their driving stunts in the movie, leading to the thrilling viewing experience. This is the same movie where Cruise hangs off the side of an airplane.

No, we didn't let your car walk on the keyboard. Tucked under the cloth is a 1963 Volvo Pansarvärnspjästerrängbil 9031, an open-top Jeep-like vehicle designed for military operations. The L33 series of vehicles spawned many variants for various purposes.

1980 Renault LeCar

1980 Renault LeCar

Appeared: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

Like many cars on this list, you have to be quick to catch them as they scream by the camera. The 1980 Renault LeCar in Mission: Impossible 2 is odd because Renault only marketed the car in the U.S as the LeCar; however, the license plate indicates the car is from Spain.

1983 Citroën BX

1983 Citroën BX

Appeared: Mission: Impossible (1996)

Many of the quirky cars in Mission: Impossible hide in the background. A keen eye will spot flashes of automotive oddities, like the 1983 Citroën BX scooting by unnoticed in the background as an extra. However, the BX's unique C-Pillar – possibly a BX GT – gives away the car's European origins.

1987 Oltcit Club

1987 Oltcit Club

Appeared: Mission: Impossible (1996)

If you're getting some Citroën vibes, you're not wrong. Oltcit was a joint venture between France's Citroën and the Romanian government. The Oltcit Club, built from 1981 to 1995, is based on the Citroën Prototype Y. In the movie, it's an odd three-door hatchback going about its business.

Shanghai-Volkswagen Santana B2 [Typ 32B]

1991 Suzuki Every

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

A tiny blue and white van may not seem impressive, but the 1991 Suzuki Every is in its eighth generation when it stars inGhost Protocol. It's currently in its 11th generation. In 1987, the small people mover received a turbocharged engine and a new, adorable appearance.

1993 Mitsuoka Viewt

1993 Mitsuoka Viewt

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011)

You'd be sorely mistaken if you think this is a rare luxury car from the 1930s. The Mitsuoka Viewt is a modified Nissan March/Micra. The odd design is supposed to resemble the 1962 Jaguar Mark 2. This is certainly an odd one to show up in the car elevator.

1995 Ford LTD Stretch Limousine

1995 Ford LTD Stretch Limousine

Appeared: Mission: Impossible 2 (2000)

If you're living a life of luxury, what comes to mind when considering evening transportation? If you thought a 1995 Ford LTD Stretch Limousine, then you've arrived. It came with a hood ornament reminiscent of a Lincoln without the prestige. While based on the Ford Falcon in Australia, it retained the LTD name.

2004 Citroën C5

2004 Citroën C5

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation (2015)

Rounding out French oddities is the 2004 Citroën C5, a quirky sedan that toes the line between classic Citroën quirkiness and modern-day design sensibilities. This example is hiding in a parking garage in the movie.

2011 Kia Picanto

2011 Kia Picanto

Appeared: Mission: Impossible – Rouge Nation (2015)

The Kia Picanto has a brief appearance in the film, serving only as an extra in Rouge Nation. The tiny five-door hatch appears to be a first-generation example. It's a reminder that the U.S. misses out on a lot of small, engaging hatchbacks.

Many action movies today rely on CGI, shaky cam, and wide-angled shots to mask mediocre action sequences. But Mission: Impossibleis different. Tom Cruise as Ethan Hunt first hit the silver screen in Brain De Palma's 1996 big-screen reboot of the classic TV series, and ever since it's been a benchmark for in-camera stunts and special effects. While the franchise had had its ups – Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol– and downs – Mission: Impossible 2 –it has consistently delivered thrills with Cruise famously doing the majority of his own stunts.

And you can't have an action movie without cars. And the Mission: Impossible franchise is full of both high-performance star cars and plenty of extras milling in the background waiting to explode, crash, or get destroyed. With six movies spanning 22 years, we're taking a look at 10 of the coolest and weirdest cars the franchise has to offer.
